Description
The Illinois River Valley, a little outside the Chicago area, is a heavily forested area in stark contrast to the flat lands that surround it. The valley itself is part of Starved Rock State Park, a wonderful area briming with wildlife and vibrant foliage. Fall is especially nice, and if you plan ahead with a houseboat rental you can really settle in and take in the scenery.
The river is usually too swift for swimming, but fishing is very popular. Smallmouth, largemouth, striped and white bass abound. If a houseboat is too much, the local marina offers smaller rentals and a launch ramp if you've already got a boat.
