Expansive, edgy, and often windy, the city of Chicago is not only one of America's largest cities but also boasts a dense concentration of cultural sights to match its size with summer lake-based activity thrown in to seal the deal.
Government Prairie Road Scenic Drive passes through the heart of Government Prairie, a broad expanse of grassland that stands out in stark contrast to the surrounding forest. The area is dotted with hills covered with grass rather than shrubs or trees, a feature unique in this primarily forested area.
Sometimes during the summer it is possible to see pronghorn antelope grazing on the slopes of these hills or in the wide open spaces between them. This road offers superb views of the San Francisco Peaks to the east and, to the north, one can see Kendrick Mountain, the tallest peak in the Kaibab National Forest at 10,400 feet.
The route is mostly cinder surfaced, suitable for passenger vehicles for about 4 miles. The last 4.5 miles is not surfaced and is suitable for high clearance vehicles in dry weather only.
